Many people think that puppy crate covers are not necessary. They see the crate as a place to keep the dog safe and secure, away from other pets and out of your hair. In reality, puppy crate covers help puppies feel more secure and comfortable in their crates. By giving them a puppy crate cover, they will have less anxiety and fear about being left alone in their crates.
If you decide you should buy a puppy crate cover for your puppy, you should always choose one that fits him or her properly. It is important that the puppy feels like they are covered in a blanket and can relax in the crate while they nap. If the puppy has special needs, consider getting an extra blanket or two so they can curl up with one or two of them during the cold winter months. The puppy should be able to move around comfortably inside the crate. The crate cover should not be too tight because then they may be able to squeeze through but not be able to turn around.
Some puppy owners prefer to use a puppy crate cover made especially for puppies. These kinds are usually more durable and resistant to stains and tears. It is also advisable to get a cover with Velcro closures so you can close it tightly once your puppy is inside. Although it may be more expensive, it is a good investment as it will provide your puppy with protection against the elements as well as everyday wear and tear. You can always buy several replacement blankets so there are no accidents.
When puppy crate covers are used correctly, it can give your puppy a sense of security and comfort. Your puppy should have access to the outside world but you should try to limit it as much as possible. You should leave some space between the crate and the wall so that your puppy will not be able to chew through it. If you do not cover the whole crate, allow your puppy to go in and out as they please and gradually move the crate cover further away from the wall. Just make sure that when your puppy climbs in, they get out immediately otherwise the scent could go into the house.
Ideally the puppy crate cover should be made of a comfortable material that allows your puppy to stand on it and turn around. If it is too tight, it will suffocate your puppy and they will not be able to stand on it. However, if the material is too loose, it will also trap air, which can cause the puppy to suffocate. If it is too big, it may even be dangerous as dogs can get trapped in between the walls of the crate and the sides.
When choosing a puppy crate cover, make sure you choose one that is easy to clean. In addition to being easy to clean you also want one that will not irritate your puppy. A lot of dog crates these days are made from materials that easily get chewed. The last thing you want to do is have your puppy choke on their own stuffing! If it is an outdoor crate, choose one that has a waterproof layer so that rain and other outside factors will not damage it.
Most puppy crate covers today have a Velcro strap or other closure method that will secure it around your puppy’s neck and torso. This is a good option because it will keep your puppy off of the floor where they have a tendency to get stuck. On a side note, you should always ask your veterinarian’s advice before using any type of cloth material for your puppy’s crate. Some cloth materials can actually aggravate your puppy’s skin. The best recommendation would be to use a harness or a leash for your puppy. Even if you decide to use a crate cover, you should still take them outside every couple of hours for exercise and play.
So as you can see, there is no need to leave your puppy in their puppy crate for hours on end. If you decide you do, make sure you provide a nice chew mat just for them. And lastly, as mentioned before, you should only use a puppy crate cover during the day. The rest of the time leave them in their puppy crate. That way they are safe and happy.
